CLASS 1 LICENCE

Mandatory Entry Level Training (MELT)

121.5 Hours Professional Truck Driver Training Program

New mandatory training requirements have been introduced for individuals seeking a Class 1 driver's licence in Manitoba. Drivers must now complete an approved Class 1 Mandatory Entry-Level Training (MELT) course before they can book their road test.

This applies to drivers who wish to operate a semi-trailer truck. Along with the MELT course, other existing provincial licensing requirements still apply.

The Province of Manitoba has implemented this regulation in alignment with other Canadian provinces that are also introducing similar standards. Previously, training was recommended, but not required. The MELT program ensures all new drivers receive consistent, safety-focused instruction before obtaining a Class 1 licence.

Summary:

  • Mandatory for all new Class 1 applicants
  • Minimum of 121.5 training hours
  • Must be completed before road test booking
  • Includes classroom, in-yard, and in-truck instruction
  • Implemented across Manitoba and aligned with national standards
